Well - now the iPhone has come out and the landscape for personal phones is
changing again. So many things you can do nowadays with electronic items. There is one personal electronic item which I think will survive all others. This is because I think that all other electronic items will merge into one "personal
tool". I believe this electronic gadget to be the mobile phone. The mobile phone in a few years will be more than even this website's title - pocket pc mobile phone.
As gadgets we have used in the past - once they converge into the mobile phone, the old single technology version will vanish. For instance, I don't expect to see a digital picture-only camera available for sale in 5 to 10 years - because the digital picture-only camera will merge into the new video camera, which in turn will be part of a mobile phone. Same goes for all of those mp3 players - they will migrate into the mobile phone. Same as for those small digital recorders... those personal digital assistants... those walkie talkies... those gps systems...that computer with email and internet access...
I believe that all the above technologies will converge into one tool - the mobile phone. I am looking toward the big mobile phone companies like Motorola and Noika, and the big computer companies like Intel and Dell, and the big software and Internet companies like Microsoft and even Google - to all get into the act. The cell phone will become the one indispensible tool for all citizens during the coming decades of this 21st century.
There is a lot of research and development going on right now, and the computer is getting smaller and smaller, thanks to miniturization of components. Emerging technologies in personal communications and computing will become very, very powerful in the years to come. And the mobile phone will become our link to everyone.
